THE TALE OF BÚKOLLA
(2024)
"A young boy is sent into the Icelandic wilderness to find his family's beloved cow, Búkolla. Upon finding Búkolla in a cave, they begin their journey home, only to be chased by a pair of trolls. To evade capture, Búkolla uses her magical hair to conjure a river, fire, and a mountain, creating obstacles that keep the trolls at bay."
The Tale of Búkolla is a short film I animated and fabricated with music composed by James Marinas and narration by Kristín Gestsdóttir, my mother. The story of Búkolla is based on the classic Icelandic folklore and children's story which has been told for generations to Icelandic youth.
This animation was made with a top-down camera and flat-backed puppets. All the sets and puppets are made of felt and created with needle felting. The biggest challenge with this animation was staying faithful to the iconic story of Búkolla within the time and space constraints. The entirety of the process from storyboarding to postproduction was within 6 weeks and the filming space was contricted to a singular table.
